And even when people have had to bribe, it's usually only been a few dollars - but it's the stress of not knowing how they're going to take it. Uzbekistan definitely felt more corrupt than Kazakhstan - especially in the cities, Kazakhstan felt more like a European country in some ways. Fortunately most times I was in a situation where bribing may have solved things, there was another way out. Had very similar experience to you. but would also very much recommend the Museum of Luxembourg. It show both the history as well as modern life in the city,including aspects such as poverty that you might not expect. It's really interactive and a total delight to wander through.
