I took that same bus (well, one of those 24-hour buses) many years ago and loved it. I felt like I was (sort of) flying first class (especially compared to so many buses I'd taken before.). It was nice to sleep for a change.

Strange country Kazakhstan, in my mind it's the typical off-the-beaten-path destination.

Fortunately most times I was in a situation where bribing may have solved things, there was another way out. And even when people have had to bribe, it's usually only been a few dollars - but it's the stress of not knowing how they're going to take it. Uzbekistan definitely felt more corrupt than Kazakhstan - especially in the cities, Kazakhstan felt more like a European country in some ways.

Frustrating isn't it?! I've heard of people having to do the same for Russia - fortunately they didn't for me, both times I've been. Unfortunate, because many tourists might even spend longer if they had more flexibility! And thanks for your comments - very kind!

It's funny that even when you've been to a place, there's always a reason to return - museum sounds really good, thanks for the recommendation!

great article! i mean really. what you said here could apply to other countries outside central asia. i hear you with number 5 most especially. we went to china early this year and we were required to provide where we were staying for our whole trip! we had to book all our hostels in advance because we were required to submit our reservations as part of the paperwork. and i was kinda hoping to have more flexibility in the cities/places i'd be visiting. oh well.

I was in Luxembourg in July this year and loved it. Had very similar experience to you. but would also very much recommend the Museum of Luxembourg. It show both the history as well as modern life in the city, including aspects such as poverty that you might not expect. It's really interactive and a total delight to wander through. You learn as you walk along and enjoy. Best museum I've been to in a long while. Needless to say they also won various awards.

Kazakhstan is somewhere I really want to go - but I don't know how I will handle the constant need to bribe officials and such, which I hear is prevalent there
